Yet another athlete who’s route to strongman has come via the rugby pitch. The former second row, Johan Els, is improving quickly and has progressed from rookie to potential WSM finalist in just two years.
Unsurprisingly, considering his sporting past, Els is a real threat in any event requiring speed and movement. Stones, too are a particular strength, although his static lifts, particularly his deadlift, are fast improving. Growing up on a farm, Johan owns and manages a tavern in central South Africa. Nearing 40, Els is one of a number of exceptional strength athletes who are proving that age is no hindrance to success in the world of strongman.
